Club drugs are becoming more popular in the young adult, teen, and nightlife cultures of Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah. Club drugs are a staple of the rave and trance dance scenes and are becoming more common in use. This rising usage has generated an increasing number of reports of abuse throughout the country.  The most popular club drugs are described below.

  • Ecstasy (MDMA): both a stimulant and psychedelic drug. It is often used to remain active for long intervals of time. At times ecstasy diminishes negative feelings such as aggression and anxiety while increasing confidence and types of sensations in order to create a type of euphoria.
  • Rohypnol (Roofies): a sedative/tranquilizer that is legally available for prescription outside of the U.S. It is commonly referred to as the date rape drug because it can cause amnesia and is therefore used for sexual assaults.
  • GHB (Liquid Ecstasy, G): was first used to stimulate muscle growth in body builders. It is often used with alcohol to sedate individuals for sexual assault/rape.  GHB can also cause feelings of intoxication, increased energy, happiness, highly social activity, enhanced sexual experience, loss of coordination, amnesia and loss of consciousness.
  • Ketamine (Special K): a tranquilizer created for animals. Special K became popular in the 1980s when large doses were used to create effects such as dreamlike states and hallucinations, similar to those of PCP.

Club drugs can take multiple forms including tablets, powder, suppositories, and liquid.  Club drugs are also difficult to detect, as they can be odorless, mostly tasteless and easily dissolvable.

The prevalence of club drugs has left many public safety personnel and government officials uneducated and untrained on the subject.  The general public is also unfamiliar with the prosecution, penalties, and attitude of the law towards club drugs in their jurisdiction.  If you are accused or arrested for the possession and/or sale of a controlled substance it would be in your best interest to contact an expert Utah criminal defense attorney to advise you in this complicated area of the law.
